Third molars (wisdom teeth) are the last teeth to develop. They grow inside the bone at the back of the mouth. If the jaws do not grow long enough the third molars stay trapped (impacted) inside the bone. Impacted third molars can cause a number of problems including: a dull pain in the jaws; infection in the overlying gums; or damage to the tooth in front. They are usually removed under comprehensive local anaethetic or, if requested by the patient, under IV sedation and local anaesthetic in the surgery.
